Project No Buy: Week Six Over and Out

So yeah, I'm dropping out. I've not been doing well and what with several things going on in my life (including the end of therapy) it's better that I not focus on beating myself up for what I have/haven't done, especially after last weeks catastrophic spends. I'm not doing great on many levels (I took up smoking again for one) and this feels a lot like a jump-on-the-bandwagon thing.

Sorry to disappoint anyone if I have, I may be back at a later date, but for now this is the last No Buy update from me.

I don't know whether it's hormones or just utter stupidity and lack of self control, but this week has been AWFUL. And those spends... argh. Still, I kind of don't regret the makeup ones. I got two more Colour Tattoo and a tonne of Barry M nail paints as well as the Victorian Disco, and well... other than one shade of Barry M which looks suspiciously like a Ciate Paint Pot I own and as long as the Victorian Disco shadows look just as good on me as they do swatched online, I will love all of them. Perils of being a Beauty Blogger I guess.

And it's the end of the month! I need to reign in the bad habits and do more driving theory. I'm using other things to compensate for not smoking and they're almost as bad. I may credit myself an extra pound or two for every week gone without bad habits, makeup is a good incentive to fix my bad days. Overall I feel in general that I just need to shape up with the spending and habits to be honest. Fingers crossed the next few weeks will be even better!

I think I'll carry over this haul saving, unless I do pick up one of the new China Glaze Hologlams I'm not sure there's much else I'm super excited about new release wise and the MUA and Shiro orders I placed this week will give me plenty of try, swatch and review (MUA was planned pre-ban so exempt and Shiro took all but the last few quid from my birthday money).

Project No Buy: Week 2

You may notice some changes this week. I've revamped things a bit to help it make more sense to me.  I explain a bit under the Tuesday overview, but basically I'm only recording money earned through rewards and spent on "not allowed" purchases (I record allowance, birthday money and spendings with those seperatley on my laptop. Makes things easier for me).

Incomings and Outgoings

Monday
Blog: +£0.20
Job Applications: +£1 (graduate scheme)
Tidying/Organisation: +£1 (washing, put bins out and started organising)
Sugar Free Pick n Mix: -£2.50

Total: -£0.30

Tuesday
Blog: +£0.20
No Smoking: +£0.10
Job Applications: +£0.10
Driving Theory: +£0.50
Tidying/Organisation: +£0.10 for dishes
Pancakes: -£1
Bad habits: -£1

Total: -£1.00

I decided how I was doing this wasn't working for me as I think I have more money than I do. Removed carry over and no longer counting my allowance into money in, or allowed purchases and groceries into money out. So basically I have to earn the “not allowed” purchases through my goals. I'm going to total up at the end of the month and whatever is there goes towards a monthly haul.

Wednesday
Blog: +£0.10
No Smoking: +£0.10
Reading: +£0.50
Job Applications: +£1
Lollipops & Tangfastics: -£1.10

Total: £0.60

Reading is 50p as I'm about halfway through the Dunwich Horror in my Necronomicon, it's much longer than many of the other stories in there which is how I've been counting “chapters”, but the chapters in there are tiny.

Thursday
Blog: +£0.20
No Smoking: +£0.10
Job Applications: +£0.70
Driving Theory: +£1
Tidying/Organisation: +£0.50

Total: £2.50

No Smoking: +£0.10
Driving Theory: +£1
Bad Habits: -£1

Total: £0.30

Things were going well until the evening when something happened with my Grandma (she's fine, just a fool) and we spent over an hour talking to the police and having to sort things out there. Pair with a disagreement and well, bad habits used to cope surfaced. Boo. This also was one of the reasons I didn't get much done otherwise.

Sunday
Blog: +£0.20
No Smoking: +£0.10
Job Applications: +£0.10
Driving Theory: +£0.50
Tidying/Organisation: +£2
Spendies: -£3
Bad Habits: -£1

Total: -£1.10

So today ended up being a carry on of yesterday, in other words - full of stress featuring drama and arguments. To be honest I want to give myself some credit for not going out and buying a pack of cigarettes (mine ran out earlier) and chain smoking them, but I dealt in other harmful ways so I guess I can't really. Oh well, I'm off to bed soon and next week is a new week and a new start. I'm still ironing out some of the kinks with this and it's still early days so there's time!

Overall:

Money Spent: £10.60
Money Earned: £16.40
Total for the week: £5.80
Total in the monthly haul fund: £12.75

Not too bad a week in the end. Need to keep a closer eye on bad habits and buying junk food-wise, but I'm pleased with how much tidying I've done and how much driving theory. Tidying has taught me that I need to invest in more makeup storage, it's not all going to fit in my drawer when it's neatly organised! haha

Blog post: +£0.10
No Smoking: +£0.10
Job Applications: +£1.00

Total: £13.73

Not too bad, in fairness to the purchases the nail varnish was to replace one I adore and was reduced from £1.75, the Kit Kats were also reduced to £1 a pack from £1.59 so I saved £1.18 there. Mega guilt over the bus fare as I usually walk, but my foot hurt and it rained on the way home so kind of worth it

Money for delivering Grandma's papers: +£1.50
Blog post: +£0.10
No Smoking: +£0.10
Job Applications: +£1.00

One unnecessary food purchase which I am kicking myself for. Otherwise pretty good, lettuce and berries are both healthy and part of my weekly food shop. Yay for no smoking and yay for blog posting. Even though I was feeling really sick that day.Plus managed 2 chapters of Hallucinations by Oliver Sacks, I love is books, they're always really interesting and this one is cracking!

Wednesday

Reading book: +£2.00
No smoking: +£0.10
Blog Post: +£0.20
Job Applications: +£1.50
Bad habits; -£1.00

Total: £17.23

Best day so far! No purchases at all (though my mum did buy me more milk and BBQ sauce, I feel bad) and I managed to earn some money. Proud with my lack of smoking too. Though I am disappointed I let a bad thing slip in right at the end of the day.

Thursday

Birthday money: +£260
Valentines Chocolates: -£1.00
Caramel Biscuits: -£1.00
Toffee Crisp: -£0.50
Face Mask: -£0.75
Fruit Snack: -£0.59
No Smoking: +£0.10
Blog Post: +£0.10

 Total: £273.59

Around half my birthday money will be going straight into the future fund. The rest I may use to make cheeky, naughty purchases! But today was always going to be an odd one because of birthday income and birthday naughty spending.

Friday

Groceries: -£3.05
No smoking: +£0.10
Reading: +£4.00
Blog Posts: +£0.20

Total: £274.84

Finished my book! Now I just need to get started on my new one :). I should have applied for jobs but I spent so long at my Grandad's watching the rugby I couldn't be bothered afterwards. Which is a really bad way of looking at things.

Saturday

Tweezers: -£3.48
Lip Stain: -£3.98
Snacks for the Rugby: -£1.50
No Smoking: +£0.10
Blog Post: +£0.10
Job Application: +£0.50
Bad Habits: -£1.00

Total: £265.58

I did need the tweezers, I lost my only good pair and I hate not being able to do my brows. It's an obsession, and a bit of a bad habit. Proud of myself for managing so well on the not smoking, though I really need to get into gear with these job applications! The lip stain was naughty, but I do have birthday money and I am obsessed with them!

Sunday

No Smoking: +£0.10
Blog Post: +£0.20
Christmas Money found whilst tidying: +£30
Makeup Orders:  -£33.04
Reading: +£1.00
Birthday money to house fund: -£170

Total: £93.84

Cheating a little as actually I'm taking the birthday money to the bank tomorrow (and it's £200 as the Makeup order was online came out of my existing funds). And yes, I broke my no buy... but it is spending Birthday money which kiiind of makes it a present? That's how I'm justifying it to myself anyway (same follows if Debenhams have the Glinda palette as the giftcard is only £20 so I'll need to spend some money). Otherwise I did okay. No jobs applied for but I am half way through a graduate scheme application, which are massive.

Overall:

Money Spent: £232.86
 On essentials/allowed purchases: £186.09
 On non-allowed purchases etc: £46.77

Money Earned: £326.70

Total: £93.84

Actually the week went better than I thought it did. This was always going to be a really weird week to start because of my Birthday and all, though I did let things slide towards the end of the week purchase wise anyway and I need to reign in bad habits. Actually removing birthday money and the money I spent because of birthday money puts me at £40 in. I think this means I'm giving myself too much credit for things...

I'm reviewing my goals/rules a little bit:
Changing job application rewards to 10p for jobsite jobs, 50p-£1.00 for graduate schemes depending on how in depth and time consuming they are (some take literally 3-4 hours).
Removing the healthy choices thing as I'm never really paying attention to it.
However I am adding some new rewards:
50p earned for every 30 minutes spent revising driving theory
My driving instructor wants me to be ready to take my theory test by the end of March, and quite frankly I find learning the stuff boring as hell. Especially all the highway code, it's such heavy going! I keep putting it off and doing other things, but it really needs to be done. So hopefully monetary rewards will get me spending more time revising that!
Earn money for organising/tidying jobs. Amount will depend on the size of the job, for example doing the dishes would be like 20p as it's usually only a few things, whereas tidying my dresser would be £1-£2 as it's a mess xD.
I need to be more organised and tidy, I annoy myself. And with some contributing factors at home which are out of my control, every little I do can help and let me retain a little sanity.

Project No Buy

Basics:

I need to save money. I've been graduated since June and while yes, I do live at home so I don't have bills and rent to pay, I really need to get a grip on my spending and learn to save before I actually have the ability to get myself into serious trouble and not just by draining my savings. So after seeing so many beauty bloggers (and others) being involved in no-buys I thought this was just the kick up the ass I needed. What's odd about me is that I actually probably spend more flippantly when it comes to food than make up/beauty products. Though I can be stupid with both. Yep, I'm an odd beauty blogger!

I'm going to track all my income and outgoings. I get £100 a month allowance (I know! I know! Spoilt. My sister gets the same and she also has student loan and grants, plus as you'll see I do buy most of my own food and pay for transport etc) which, with £20 put aside for future house & wedding fund, leaves me with £20 a week to start with.

I'm a bit daunted by the total no buy thing, so I've stolen The Dark Side Of Beauty's idea and method. You can see how she's doing hers, and follow her awesome progress here

Rules:

  • No unnecessary (ie. Outside of weekly shop) food buys
  • No beauty product buys
  • No buying random nick-nacks I don't need!
  • Track all money spent and do a weekly round up.
  • No magazines!

Exceptions:

  • When I run out of something I don't already have a replacement for (ie. Concealer, toner)
  • Presents eg. Birthdays, Valentines etc
  • Limited Editions or what have you that I know I won't get a chance to pick up again (ever or this year).
  • Things bought with gift cards.
  • Drinks/lunch on days when I'm out all day and forgot to pack anything.

Rewards:

  • Reading (I struggle with concentration) - £1.00 per chapter
  • Job applications – 10p per job applied for via jobsites, 50p - £1 for graduate schemes dependant on complexity & time taken
  • Blog – 10p per blog post
  • Health – 10p per day not smoked, taking away/"spending" £1 for every time I use a bad habit
  • Learning – 50p per 30 minutes spent revising Driving Theory
  • Tidying/Organisation – Dependant on job, eg 20p for dishes, £1-£2 for tidying room etc

I'll be updating weekly. Wish me luck!
