Birthstone Series: May Emerald

Used: Shiro Rupee on the inner corner, Shiro There and Back Again across the lid and for my brows, Victorian Disco Sailor Jupiter (Makoto) on the outer corner, Hello Waffle Envy as liner and for the crease colour. And a touch of Collection glitter liner for sparkle and funsies.

I really like this look! I do love greens anyway and I really liked the shape. I need there to be more green, purple and red birthstones, those looks come out best (possibly because I have the most different variations of those shadows).

Earth Day Makeup

Earth Day is an annual event, celebrated on April 22, on which day events worldwide are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. It was first celebrated in 1970, and is now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network, and celebrated in more than 192 countries each year.

Birthstone Seriees: April Diamond

For those who were born in the month of April the Diamond is the traditional birthstone. The April birthstone poem reflects some of the properties with which the Diamond is associated - enhancing relationships and increasing inner strength. The Traditional Metaphysical Properties for the April Birthstone Diamond are  balance, clarity and abundance. The healing properties of the April birthstone are reputed to be effective for health problems relating to brain diseases, pituitary glands. Used: Geek Chic My Mind Palace on the inner corner and above the crease, Geek Chic Morningstar on the lid, Shiro Finklestein on the center of the lid, Shiro Megaflare on the outer corner. Brows and crease are Geek Chic Don't Blink, liner is Collection Glam Crystals Hustle and I used a touch of Geek Chic Rock Salt for glitter.

Not a look I would ever wear out of the house, too pale especially given how pale and pink I am, but I quite like what I came up with. I hope you guys do to.

Easter Inspired Look

Easter is this weekend, time flies doesn't it? I thought I should do a Easter inspired look to celebrate the occasion. My inspiration for this came from mini eggs! Chocolate and pastel colours, I actually really like it, which is odd for me where it comes to pastels.

Birthstone Series: March Aquamarine

And now we're in March! Time is flying at an alarming pace.

For those who were born in the month of March the Aquamarine is the traditional birthstone. For this look I used: Shiro Finklestein on the inner corner, Victorian Disco Jack & Sally across the lid, Victorian Disco Thranduil above the crease, Shiro Bubblebeam as liner and for my brows and Victorian Disco Barrett to add some glitter.

This was a look I really struggled with, and I'm still not happy. I'm not very good at the paler looks in general and pale blues are one of the most difficult colours for me. Ah well, hopefully I'll be happier with next month's look.

St Patrick's Day

Naturally I wanted to do something a bit green for St Patricks, with a touch of gold added for luck and fortune. If you're wondering why St Patrick's is green then here's some interesting info I picked up from trusty wikipedia

On St. Patrick's Day it is customary to wear shamrocks and/or green clothing or accessories (the "wearing of the green"). St Patrick is said to have used the shamrock, a three-leaved plant, to explain the Holy Trinity to the pagan Irish. This story first appears in writing in 1726, though it may be older. In pagan Ireland, three was a significant number and the Irish had many triple deities, a fact that aided St Patrick in his evangelisation efforts. The wearing of the 'St Patrick's Day Cross', especially in the World War I era, by the Irish, was also a popular custom. These St Patrick's Day Crosses have a Celtic Christian cross made of paper that is "covered with silk or ribbon of different colours, and a bunch or rosette of green silk in the centre."

The colour green has been associated with Ireland since at least the 1640s, when the green harp flag was used by the Irish Catholic Confederation. Green ribbons and shamrocks have been worn on St Patrick's Day since at least the 1680s. Green was adopted as the colour of the Friendly Brothers of St Patrick, an Irish fraternity founded in about 1750. However, when the Order of St. Patrick—an Anglo-Irish chivalric order—was founded in 1783 it adopted blue as its colour. This led to blue being associated with St Patrick. In the 1790s, green became associated with Irish nationalism when it was used by the United Irishmen. This was a republican organisation—led mostly by Protestants but with many Catholic members—who launched a rebellion in 1798 against British rule. The phrase "wearing of the green" comes from a song of the same name, which laments United Irishmen supporters being persecuted for wearing green. Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the colour green and its association with Saint Patrick's Day grew.

Used: Victorian Disco Sailor Jupiter (Makoto) on the inner & outer corners for the halo, Shiro's Snake and Rupee in the center of the lid, Meow Heiroglyph in the crease and on the lower lashline. The eyeliner is Geek Chic's Eldritch and my bows are (of course) They're After Me Lucky Charms from Shiro.

International Women's Day Makeup

Sunday March 8th is International Women's Day!

All around the world, International Women's Day represents an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of women while calling for greater equality.

Make It Happen is the 2015 theme for our internationalwomensday.com global hub, encouraging effective action for advancing and recognising women.

Each year International Women's Day (IWD) is celebrated on March 8. The first International Women's Day was held in 1911. Thousands of events occur to mark the economic, political and social achievements of women. Organisations, governments, charities, educational institutions, women's groups, corporations and the media celebrate the day.

Various organisations identify their own International Women's Day theme, specific to their local context and interests. Many charities, NGOs and Governments also adopt a relevant theme or campaign to mark the day. For example, organisations like the UN, Oxfam, Women for Women, Care International, Plan, World Association of Girl Guides & Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) and more - run exciting and powerful campaigns that raise awareness and encourage donations for good causes. The UN has been declaring an annual equality theme for many years.

As you can see I used a lot of purples in this, so why purple?

From 1908, the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) in Great Britain adopted the colour scheme of purple, white and green to symbolise the plight of the Suffragettes. Purple symbolised justice and dignity - two values strongly associated with women's equality. The three colours were used for banners, flags, rosettes and badges to show solidarity.

The shadows I used are: Shiro's Finklestein on the inner corner, Victorian Disco Jack & Sally above the crease, Shiro's Alkahestry on the first half of the lid and My Pretty Zombie Mad Cow on the outer half of lid (possibly not the most appropriate name, but damnit it's a stunning eyeshadow!). The liner is Victorian Disco Halloween Town and my brows are Shiro's Derp.

25 Before 25

So Saturday 7th was my 24th Birthday. It was a quiet day, though I did get a treat lunch of baked cod which was awesome, and spent the evening with my family. It was nice. I've seen a lot of "x before y" posts since I've been blogging and thought it would be an awesome idea to try and get some of my goals completed for the year ahead. Or at least give me something to do before I hit 25 (scary! I barely feel like I got out of college a couple of years ago, not nearly 6!). Time flies. Anyway, here are my goals for my 24th year of life. Some are much easier than others, and some I'm carrying on from the start of the year (no-buy, films, Hellblazer and books). didn't really work out quite as I had planned. Ah well., I used My Pretty Zombie Anthrax (I'll put the swatches up soon™), with Innocent + Twisted Alchemy Sweet Pandemonium in the center. I can't quite remember the black on the outer corner, but the glitters are Choppa Gunner by Victorian Disco and Starburst from Darling Girl. Liner is Collection Glam Crystals in Rock Chick over a plain black liner. Brows are Shiro They're After Me Lucky Charms.

Birthstone Series: February Amethyst

Second month, second look in the birthstone series. This is my birthday month and my birthstone, the Amethyst! 

For those who were born in the month of February the Amethyst is the traditional birthstone. The February birthstone poem reflects some of the properties with which the Amethyst is associated - stability, peace, balance, courage, inner strength, sincerity and a calm disposition. The healing properties of the February birthstone are reputed to be effective for health problems relating to the withdrawal symptoms of any sort of addiction,  headaches, insomnia, arthritis, pain relief, circulatory system issues and general healing. The Amethyst is also referred to as the the "sobriety stone" as it was once believed to prevent drunkenness and used to treat alcoholism and other types of addictions. via birthdaygems.org

For this look I used Shiro Alkahestry in the center of the lid and inner corner, with Geek Chic Bad Wolf over the rest of the lid and blended out past the crease. On the outer corner and in the crease I tried to add a little darkening with Fyrinnae Mystical Hedgehog.

Green Liner

So nearly everything I tried this weekend went wrong (ever had one of those weeks?) but I did manage to put together this simple look, which is a great way to wear a bright eyeliner. If you want to go with a bright colour for eyeliner and don't want to forgo the eyeshadow but don't want it to look too much then go for a more subtle shade. I went for a peachy orange with a bright green liner, because it's all so grey right now and a little brightness never hurt!

Used: Darling Girl Turning Japanese on the inner corner and inner 1/3rd ish, Victorian Disco Sailor Venus (Minako) over most of the lid, Darling Girl The Seam on the outer corner and crease (very blended, you can only just about see it), Shiro Hero of Ages as the liner and last but not least my brows are Victorian Disco Zangermarsh

Battle of the Five Armies look

This is the look I wore to go see The Hobbit: Battle of the Five Armies just before Christmas. I couldn't 100% remember what I used to put this together, but I pieced it together from the makeup I took home with me.

Used: Victorian Disco Helga as the gold in the center, Victorian Disco Godric on the inner and outer corners, Shiro The Last Homely House in the crease and blended out above it. Glitter is Victorian Disco UAV. Brows are Victorian Disco Salazar and Rowena (mostly Rowena). The liner is Extreme Liner from Collection 2000, the mascara is Maybelline Collosal.

I later pretty much recreated it using slightly different products:

Didn't get a good picture but this was Meow Hieroglyph and Aromaleigh Rubicante, and Victorian Disco Salazar brows.

Pumpkin Spice

Autumn, time of the pumpkin. Also a great time to break out the oranges and greens for a seasonally appropriate eyeshadow look.

Used: Shiro Snake on the inner corner, Darling Girl Ripley's Cat over the lid, Victorian Disco Godric on the outer edge of the lid, Meow Telekenisis above the crease and Black Rose Minerals Spike as the liner and very lightly in the crease. Brows are probably Fyrinnae's Conjuror (if not they'll be Victorian Disco Hero Class, I forget).

Green and orange, it looks good. And Snake makes such a nice inner corner pop of brightness.

Favourite Autumnal Coppers and Golds

With metallics being a big trend this A/W and copper and gold both being wonderfully seasonal colours (they remind me of the changing colours of the leaves ) I thought I would share some of my favourite indie copper and gold eyeshadows. Some of the coppers lean a little more red than many but they're such gorgeous shades reminiscent of leaves that I couldn't not.

Swatches are done over primer on the left and pixie epoxy on the right and photographed in natural light. I've linked to the individual shadows on the company websites wherever I can, I do apologise for the discontinued shades that I included but c'est la vie. You may be able to purchase discontinued shades over on indiemakeupandmore on reddit (or occasionally makeupexchange) or blog sales. If anyone knows any other places then please do give me a heads up!

My choices for coppers are mostly from Victorian Disco. I'm not sure whether this means I really love their copper shades or whether I've just ordered the most coppery eyeshadows from Ashley, either way she has some simply stunning shades. The four shades I picked for my copper picks are Victorian Disco Why Is It Always You Three? from the new House Points collection, Victorian Disco Godric from the now discontinued old House Points collection, Victorian Disco Hero Class from the Azeroth collection (this shade is discontinued), and one eyeshadow from Geek Chic Cosmetics which is Antequarian from the now discontinued Strange Aeons collection (I am gutted they're gone and I missed grabbing a few full sizes while the shadows were on clearance). Apologies for all the discontinued shades, I didn't quite realise while I was choosing them how many were!

Victorian Disco Why is it Always You Three? - Light caramel-golden taupe with a strong red sheen. 

It's the red sheen which makes this colour more coppery, though this shade does lean towards the more gold side. I like this as an inner corner shade or on slightly subtler days as an all over lid wash.

Victorian Disco Godric - Rust red with a golden sheen and shimmer.

This is a shade which leans a lot more towards the red shade of the spectrum, a bright shiny copper reminiscent of the pots hanging in old victorian kitchens. Or at least that's what this reminds me of, I'm really trying to get a lot more wear out of this shade, I do love it. 

Victorian Disco Hero Class - Deep copper with a golden sheen and copper sparkles. 

The pixie epoxy really brings out the red copper in this. It's a stunning shade, reminds me of copper pennies and wire. It's a gorgeous outer corner and crease shade, and one I sometimes use for my brows. 

Geek Chic Antequarian - awesome glowing copper with gold iridescence and sparkle

This is probably one of my favourite eyeshadows, next time I see someone selling one on IMAM I'm grabbing it no matter what. This is a stunning dark copper that I use for almost everything, crease, all over lid, brows, it's just so beautiful. You can see the sparkle too, I just love it.

These are the golds. I've got a good range of them, so hopefully one of these would tickle your fancy. And thankfully only one discontinued! The golds I chose are Shiro Slave 23 from the Fullmetal Collection, Shiro Cornucopia from the Tributes collection, Victorian Disco Sailor Galaxia from the Sailor Scouts collection and Geek Chic Antediluvian from the sadly discontinued Strange Aeons collection.

Shiro Slave 23 -  A sheer wash of gold loaded with golden and silver sparkle. 

This is a beautiful fairly subtle colour, albeit one loaded with sparkle. I've used this as an all over lid shade during the christmas period but most frequently I use it as an inner corner or center lid highlight. It's lip safe and makes a pretty sparkle over lipstick too.

Shiro Cornucopia - Bright, bold yellow with strong golden shimmer.

This is a gorgeous bright shade, maybe it's a little summery but it cheers me up and that's perfect for when the skies start to get greyer and darker and the weather all goes downhill.

Victorian Disco Sailor Galaxia  Deep molten gold.

Molten gold is the perfect description for this colour, it's just so beautiful. Honestly I'm half-drooling just looking at the swatch, this shadow is so beautiful.

Geek Chic Antediluvian -  burnished, antique gold with bronze tones and multi-colored sparkle

Another shadow that I wish I had a full size of. I love this colour, and it makes for a perfect outer corner and crease colour to give a metallic smoky eye. Or a more subtle but still interesting liner.

Green and Purple

 As you read this I'm in Croatia, probably packing my stuff so I'm ready to fly back home! Anyway, this is a quick look from a couple of weeks ago. In an effort to 'shop my stash' and get more use out of products I haven't touched in too long I rediscovered the stunning Snake eyeshadow from Shiro, which is a bright chartreuse shade that I really should use more. Perhaps not quite the quintessential autumn shade, but it was warm and sunny.

Used: Shiro Snake on the inner corner, Kiss My Sass Spellbound over most of the lid, Black Rose Minerals Lunar Reflection in/above the crease, Victorian Disco My Feels on the lower lashline Fyrinnae Mephisto as a liner. Brows are, I think, Task Force.

(also, have I mentioned how amazing Mephisto is as a liner? It looks SO GOOD.)

Red Liner (inspired by Sharon Farrell)

Ever since I saw this really awesome looking use of red eyeliner  by Sharon Farrell (who, fyi is a really awesome makeup artist and you should all go subscribe to her youtube channel here) I really wanted to give it a go. Red isn't a colour you ever really think to use as a liner (outside of creative artsy looks) but actually it looks amazing. Since I have a much underloved burgundy eyeshadow I finally put it to use.

Used: Shiro Heart Attack as eyeliner, Kiss My Sass Meteor in the crease, Detrivore Autopsy over the lid. Eyeko skinny liner to define the eye and add a bit of a darker line (in place of the false lashes Sharon used).

Really the main focus here is the liner, and Heart Attack is an utterly beautiful colour.  

Aria Night Out Look

You guys might not know this, but I'm going on holiday with my family in November and December for three weeks as part of my sister's Graduation present (which handily coincides with my mother's week long meeting in New Orleans and her airmiles and hotel points covering all flights and remaining hotels xD). One of the places we shall be visiting is Las Vegas (I have visited once before as part of my Graduation present, which also handily coincided with a long San Diego meeting and a lot of airmiles and hotel points) so when Aria got in touch with me to ask if I wanted to create a look as part of their #AriaNightOut campaign I was all over it! I loved Vegas last time I went, okay so it was very hot and I kind of burned my feet so badly I couldn't walk (I took off my socks for less than five minutes! stupid given it was June, but goddamn), but all the glitz and glam and lights were amazing. We stayed in a budget hotel and it was still amazing. 

If you want to know more about the Aria I took a few bits from the description from their website (which you can visit by clicking on this lovely link right here) to give you an idea, though I think the photos I've added to this post should give you a good look at how stunning the place is!

This is the picture I was inspired by when I created my look, this is my favourite bit of Vegas. While I love the sophistication and glamour of the rest of the Aria, when I think Vegas I think parties and debauchery and good old fashioned fun. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas after all ;). Plus, clubs means I can throw plenty of glitter on there, and you all know how I love glitter!

This is the look I created now that my eye is healed (I've had some psoriasis type issues with my lids lately), a purple and black smokey eye, with touches of gold and plenty of glitter. Plus a few gemstones, because what better excuse? The colours I used were Victorian Disco Sailor Galaxia for the gold, Victorian Disco Eldar and Shiro Shinigami for the purple and a touch of Geek Chic Baby for the black. The glitters are a mix of UAV and Riot Shield from Victorian Disco and Collection glitter liner.

Discworld Series: Moist Von Lipwig

It's been a long time since I posted anything from this series hasn't it? Sorry, I haven't forgotten it, though some of my inspiration for the characters has been waning (especially as it's hard to find good descriptions for a lot of them). Even more so since I lost my Kindle on a train back in May and along with it pretty much the entirety of my Discworld collection - especially all of my to-reads :(.

Swindler, con artist and fraud wanted dead in several cities, and currently Postmaster General and Master of the Royal Mint of Ankh-Morpork. Smitten with Adora Belle Dearheart, whom he calls "Spike". After a tough apprenticeship as her fiancé (note that it was not the other way around), they are, as of Raising Steam, married and resident in a property on upmarket Scoone Avenue, where they employ a domestic staff. He revived the postal service in Ankh-Morpork, inadvertently challenging the clacks company, which was stolen from Adora Belle Dearheart's family by a still much bigger fraudster, Reacher Gilt. Reacher Gilt is also rumoured to have had her brother, John Dearheart, killed. He folllowed this through by rescuing the fortunes of the Royal Bank and the Royal Mint.

Usually dressed all in gold in his capacity as Postmaster General (with corresponding wingèd golden hat; gold paint, of course), Moist was entrusted with the running of the clacks company after it was ascertained that Reacher Gilt and his gang of financial cronies had obtained the company by illegal means.

Moist is a character who very much grew on me. I actually first met him when I watched the Going Postal special on Sky One several years ago, having loved their version of the Hogfather (and I believe The Colour of Magic was also a predecessor to this), and honestly I found him irritating. Then I got around to reading the books and honestly in the books he was so much better! I really enjoyed his character, fell head over heels with Adora Belle, and was sucked in reading about his adventures and their relationship growing. Honestly if you didn't like the special you might still like book Moist, he's far more intelligent and well rounded in my opinion.

Used: Shiro Cosmetics Slave 23 on the inner corner, a combination of Victorian Disco Helga and Sailor Galaxia over the lid, Geek Chic Antediluvian on the outer corner and crease, Meow Cosmetics Heiroglyph as the brow colour and Femme Fatale Jewelled Scarab as a liner.

Of course I used all the golds I could! I had to try and capture the true majesty of the postmasters official gold suit! The green is for both the stamps and paper money Moist was instrumental in bringing to the Disc (well, he did invent it!). Sadly I didn't quite manage to get the railway in there, though I guess the darkness I used at the edge and crease to show his darker side - he is an 'ex' conman after all - would work.

Shiro (and Detrivore) Swatch Post

Aaages ago I did a Shiro haul, I'm finally posting the pictures. Most of these shadows and lip colours are actually available unlike the Darling Girl haul I posted earlier. This haul also includes a few Detrivore shadows, as Shiro now stock Detrivore. As before all the shadows and lip products are photographed in natural light. Lip products are swatched on bare skin, eyeshadows are swatched over primer on the left and pixie epoxy on the right. Descriptions are all straight from the Shiro website.

First up these are the three Shiro shades I bought; I Loved A Maid, Chimera and Kooloo-Limpa

I loved a maid as fair as summer, with the sunlight in her hair. She was a crofter’s daughter. And she loved me.

I Loved A Maid is a green-shifting gold shining out over a base of softened Lannister crimson. Lip-safe!

The fusing of animals with human beings oftentimes produces tragic results, but that’s the price of scientific advancement. Cave Johnson would approve!

Chimera is a complex and unique blend – looks coppery in the jar, then applies as tarnished gold and silver shimmer over a blackened background. Lip-safe!

Kooloo Limpa - Satiny peach with green and red sparkles. Lip safe!

Tingle, Tingle! Kooloo-Limpah! I may be 32, but I still believe I am a fairy.

And these are the three Detrivore shades I picked up; Hypothesis, Autopsy and Scar

Hypothesis is a medium satin taupe with subtle pink tones.

Autopsy is a matte cream highlight.

Scar is a pale taupe with a violet shift.

And finally the GWP, Hodor

“Hodor,” hodored Hodor. “Hodor hodor hodor!”

“HODOR, STOP HODORING.”

Hodor is a medium near-matte taupe. Lip-safe!
